Visiting Puglia
The Trulli
‘Trulli’ are the uniquely constructed stone dwellings with conical roofs to be found surrounded by ancient olive groves, vineyards, flourishing vegetable gardens and orchards in that small part of the Pugliese countryside known as the ‘Valle d’Itria’. Over centuries, the land has given up its building materials free to the hard-working ‘contadini’ who extracted them as part of a demanding farming procedure. Such simple rearrangement of nature’s parts has resulted in a rare and exquisite integrity of landscape which still survives in this precious part of Puglia today.
The little houses have been whimsically (and most aptly) described as ‘Loire castles for Hobbits’. They look like it, they feel like it!
Local markets in Martina Franca, Cisternino, Locorotondo, Ostuni and Alberobello.
